The fresco technique consists of painting on a wet plaster surface, using pigments mixed with water. The paint forms a chemical bond with the plaster as it dries, resulting in a highly durable painted surface. Since the plaster dries in approximately one to two days, the artists have to paint with great rapidity and confidence. Babilonia Arte therefore avails itself only of professional fresco artists chosen from the best art schools. Each of them is specialized in a specific artistic field, such as flowers, still lives, landscapes or figurative art etc. so as to guarantee our customers the best possible quality and a great, innovative range of different subjects.
Once the fresco has been painted, the plaster has to dry completely. Then, a sheet of canvas is affixed onto the fresco with water soluble glue. When the glue is dry, the fresco is literally stripped from its foundation. This way the painting is removed, which remains stuck to the canvas in a "negative". To transfer the “positive” of the painting, a second canvas is glued with non-water soluble glue to the back of the first one. Again, the fresco has to dry. Then, the first glue is dissolved by washing the painting with water and the first canvas is removed.
In this way, the fresco has been transferred to the second canvas. This technique is called "Calicot" or the "strappo method".
Afterwards, the finished fresco can be fixed onto a frame and hung like a picture. For bigger sized paintings, it can be sent without a frame for direct application on a wall or other support.
